Senior captain, Orion Masterson in Bears Home game.
The Brattleboro Bears took on the Burlington SeaHorses in a thrilling game on Brattleboro’s home turf. The Sea Horses took down the Bears in a nail-biting contest, 4-2.
Ten minutes into the game, senior captain, Orion Masterson, took a shot from the 30-yard line. The ball hit the top of the cross bar and bounced in, making the game 1-0 Bears. Very quickly after Masterson’s goal, Burlington’s own Zen Nguyen made his mark and tied the game at 1. Then, Seahorse Kade Ladner scored making it 2-1. The game was eventually tied at 2-2 due to a Seahorse’s own goal.
Senior goalie Sam Bogart put his body on the line, making four difficult saves in the final fifteen minutes.
“I treat every shot like it's an overtime shot,” Bogart said.
In the final minute there was a penalty kick called against Brattleboro, giving the Seahorses an easy opportunity. Bogart made a tremendous save, but the shot did not count due to a line violation. The Seahorses got a second opportunity and took advantage of it. That penalty goal made it 3-2. The goal was scored by Burlington's Quinn Sessions who then scored another goal twenty seconds later. Making the final score 4-2.
“Every year, we are looked at as a team that cannot compete with every team in the state. This game proved them all wrong,” head coach Chris Brewer said.
Bogart added, “Our goal going into the game was to win, but it was also to prove to the rest of the state our true skill and ability, especially northern teams. While we lost the game, we certainly achieved our second goal. No one is going to want to play the Bears.”
Despite the loss, the Bears will continue to improve, and compete with every opponent they face.
